Efforts by the US military to stabilise the Afghan government and defeat the Taliban rely heavily on controlling the lawless province, where much of the opium that funds the insurgency is grown and through which Taliban fighters travel to safe havens in Pakistan. US President Barack Obama said US and NATO-led troops had pushed back the Taliban in Afghanistan but he warned that there was still a long, hard campaign ahead.
